Behind the Paintings

My name is Lior. I'm an Israeli digital artist — and I've spent years trying to paint two things at once: the land I walk through every day, and the ancient stories that happen to have taken place on it.

I was born and raised in the streets of Jerusalem. Not the postcard version — the real one. The stone alleyways that absorb three thousand years of footsteps. The markets that smell of cardamom and olive oil. The rooftops where you can stand and see the Temple Mount and feel, in some wordless way, that you are standing at the center of something. The same hills where Abraham looked up at the stars stretch just beyond the city walls. The light that falls on Jerusalem's stones at dusk is the same light David walked through. Living here means living inside a story that is still unfolding — and I never stopped feeling the weight of that.

My paintings move between two worlds. One is the physical Israel — the blue alleys of Tzfat, the still waters of the Galilee, the ancient market streets of Jerusalem, the desert cliffs of Ein Gedi. The other is the world of the Tanakh — the fire that burned but did not consume, the ark rising above a flooded world, Abraham standing under an impossible sky full of stars, the Levites singing on the Temple steps. Both worlds feel equally real to me. In Israel, the border between them is paper-thin.

When I discovered digital painting, I found the medium I'd been looking for my entire life. Not photography, which can only capture what is — but painting, which can capture what something means. I pour hours into each piece: the chiaroscuro light, the weight of the brushwork, the colors that make a scene feel both ancient and alive. My goal is not to illustrate the Bible or to photograph Israel. It's to bring you inside the feeling of both.

Many of you carry this land and these stories in your hearts, even if you've never stood here yourself. You've said "Next year in Jerusalem" around a Passover table. You've passed down these narratives to your children as something precious, non-negotiable, yours.
